How To Tie Popular Knots

Square Knot

You can loosen the square knot easily by either pushing the ends toward the
knot or by "upsetting" the knot by pulling back on one end and pulling the
other through the loops.

In the United Kingdom the square knot is called a reef knot so called as it is the knot
used by sailors to 'reef' or shorten sails in bad weather or to secure sails when in port.
It ties flat so will not work and rub/damage the canvas so easily and when up in the
rigging can be released by pushing it apart, a useful attribute when you could be
80-100 ft up out along the yards letting out sail.
