| An Unusual US Cover - 1934 by Bob Gelwicks |
Always looking for Boy Scout related covers I recently came across one addressed to Mr V.R. Middy, Boy Scout Cabin, Coral Gables, Fla. franked with the 3 cent George Washington stamp US # 720 (see below figure 1). The cover is backstamped in violet ‘Boy Scout Cabin 7 Rec’d ‘on reverse side.
There also is a green handstamp under the cancellation stating ‘Not a Post Office or Gov’t Cancellation’ so upon closer look the violet cancellation reads’ Miami Stamp Club P.O. Oct 13 1934 6 PM’ so apparently this is a philatelic ‘cover’. To top it off, the stamp has been previously used as it has a black cancellation.
Looking further this is not a cover but rather an 8-page pamphlet for The Miami Stamp Club Sixth annual meeting being held at the Boy Scout Cabin in Coral Gables, Florida. And, one of the Honorary Members listed in the pamphlet is Mr. Middy. Presumably these interesting items were handed out to the guests.
A quick Internet search reveals that the Boy Scout Cabin still exists although the original was burned in 1971 and is the home for the George Merrick Troop 7 which has met there since 1926. Mr. Merrick founder of Coral Gables donated the land and the cabin has a Florida Historical Marker.
While not a postal cover this item certainly has a place in a Scouting philatelic cover collection.
