When the minute men gathered at Concord Bridge on April 19, 1775, to face the British, this colorful banner waved over them. The square shape was typical of cavalry flags at the time. Emerson wrote of that battle: "By the Rude Bridge that arched the flood, their flag to April's breeze unfurled, here once the embattled farmers stood and fired the shot heard around the world." Today the "First Flag of the Revolution" may still be seen at the Bedford Library in Bedford, Massachusetts. This priceless relic is the oldest flag in the United States.
