In 1896 Utah was admitted as the 45th State of the Union. The 45 Star Flag was flown until 1907, when Oklahoma was admitted. Within that time frame... US Battleship "Maine" was blown up in Havana Harbor. United States declared war on Spain. Theodore Roosevelt formed the "First Volunteer Cavalry Regiment" better known as the "Rough Riders." Led them in a charge up "Kettle Hill," which flanked the Spanish block house on San Juan Hill. Walter Reed, an army doctor, helped to find origins and control of yellow and typhoid fevers. President McKinley had been assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States. The Wright Brothers made the first airplane flight. The first wireless message was sent across the ocean. The "Great White Fleet" of the US warships sailed on 14 month "Good Will" tour of the world. The Panama Canal Zone was obtained from Panama. San Francisco earthquake destroyed the city and killed 452 persons. Albert Einstein published his "Theory of Relativity." US claims settled in the Alaska Boundary Dispute. The American Standard Version of the Kings James Bible was published. Japan defeated Russia in the "Russo-Japanese" war. President Roosevelt became the first American to win a Nobel Peace Prize for helping to end the conflict.
